Figure Drawing and Painting

December 5-9
Monday Through Friday
Hours: 10:30-4:30 p.m.
Lunch: 1:30-2:15 p.m.

Description–
The basis of the workshop is building a solidly constructed three-dimensional figure using line as preparation for the modeling of form with light & shadow. The instructor endeavors to build a foundation of knowledge, so the artist can look for things as opposed to looking at things. The underlying goal is to give artists a deep understanding and appreciation of how line can create three-dimensional volumes in space. This enhances and strengthens their work whether it is drawing, painting or sculpture.
During the long pose, students key on the most important objectives for each phase of the figure’s development, beginning with the “action” and ending with the “modeling of form.”
Students who wish to draw will work on white or toned paper with pencil, chalk, or charcoal.  Students who wish to paint will work either in monochrome or color, depending on experience. Our goal is to draw a well-proportioned and constructed figure that shows a secure understanding of the models surface and its relation to light & shade. Lectures and demonstrations will be given to lead the students through each step, with a clear and logical process of drawing and painting.
For most of the mornings, the instructor will review the materials and objectives for the day and will give demonstrations to illustrate the principles at each phase of the work.  In the afternoons, the students will work on their projects. The instructor will be available for individual critiques.
Day 1- AM:  Review materials and procedure for drawing the head and the figure.  Emphasis will be on gesture (vital), proportion, and linear three-dimensional construction.
Day 2- AM:  Demonstration on constructing and modeling the figure on toned paper. The open grisaille will also be introduced for painters.
Day 3-AM:  We will review the value scale and study the behavior of light and its relationship to form.
Day 4-AM:  Introduction to the color wheel and how it relates to the human figure’s flesh palette.  Palette preparation and the 1st painting (ebauche).
Day 5-AM: The 2nd painting, or second pass, towards the finish.  A discussion of the qualities of alla-prima painting and indirect painting.
Final critiques.

Dutch Still Life
Dates: April 18, 19, 20, 21, 2019 (4 days)

Hours: 10:45-5:00 p.m.
Lunch: 1:30-2:15 p.m
Fill out the registration form and email

Alla Prima painting is a working method where paint is applied wet into wet. This relatively rapid painting procedure yields a typically bold and energized expression as the work or part being worked on must be finished in the first attempt. With time and practice, the skill set gained from this practical and economical process will greatly benefit the artist no matter their subject or style.
In this workshop, artists will create a new painting each day. Participants should bring in their own objects to paint. Canvas sizes should be between 8x10 and 11x14. Once our compositions are designed, we will draw directly on the painting surface with charcoal or paint. After the drawing is completed, a quick grisaille or color lay-in will establish the general color and/or value structure of the composition. While this initial layer is still wet, a final color layer will be applied. The entire process, from the block-in, paint application, and light/color will be discussed and demonstrated in detail.
Bio:
A contemporary classical painter, Justin Wood (b. 1982) studied illustration at the College of Visual Arts at Syracuse University and classical technique with Jacob Collins at Grand Central Atelier in New York City. Drawing inspiration from the great works of Caravaggio and Rembrandt, Wood’s oil paintings demonstrate his rigorous draftsmanship, but it is his use of chiaroscuro and tactility that give way to a distinct and alluring beauty in his work.

Equally adept at the art of portraiture and figure painting, Wood has turned his attention to still life painting of which he excels: “I’m trying to create scenes with well-crafted objects, says Wood, that are pleasant to look at and create a decorative ensemble.” Wood’s invented world of light, artifact and nature resonate a calm stability, an atmosphere of meditative silence. With motifs similar to those used by seventeenth century, Dutch still life painters, Wood’s tabletop arrangements present the viewer with an ordered world where man and nature dwell in harmony. Receptacles of pewter, copper and silver coexists with figs, plums, peeling lemons and other edibles, each work owing its cohesion to the manor in which light is bathed around each object.

Justin Wood is currently represented by galleries in New York and Massachusetts. His work has been featured in a number of art fairs and exhibitions throughout the United States. Wood teaches cast drawing and painting at the Grand Central Atelier and currently lives and maintains his professional studio in New York.

Course Description
Painting Light and Color

Whenever we are painting, regardless of the subject matter, what we are really painting is light.  This workshop will take a “nuts and bolts” approach to understanding how light and color really work and also give students plenty of opportunities to practice putting the knowledge in to prac-tice.
In this course students will learn how to convincingly paint light and form in full color.  Through a combination of quick color mixing exercises and simple still life paintings students will learn how to take the mystery out of color painting.  Students will learn how to accurately mix color, how to avoid “dead” “muddy” or “chalky” color and most importantly, how to begin thinking of color not as a set of isolated pigments but rather as an interconnected series of relationships.
This class will include in depth lectures and demonstrations by the instructor on the properties of color and the physics of light, as well as detailed demonstrations and explanations of how to approach each step of the painting process from beginning to end.
In addition to learning about color and light, this course will serve as an opportunity for students to become familiar with each step of the process of creating finished paintings.  By keeping our subject matter simple, students will be able to take their paintings to a high level of finish and become comfortable with each step of the process, from the initial drawing all the way to adding the final touches at the end.
Whether you are a beginning student looking for an introduction to color painting or a more ad-vanced painter looking to refine your understanding of light and color, this class will be a great opportunity to take your understanding to the next level.

March 5-9, 2020
Hours: 10:45-5:00 p.m.

BACAA Carl Dobsky Registration form (PDF)

Description:

Over the course of the workshop, fundamental principles of proportion, design, light, form, and color will be addressed with a focus on their specific application to portraiture.  In the beginning stages consideration will be given to composition and selection of views that will enhance the dramatic element of the picture. Strategies to that end will be discussed while quick sketches will be used to explore different solutions that will help to bring a sense of the sitter’s character and personality to the lightning. After the pose has been settled on, a drawing focusing on the likeness of the model will be made using a “block-in” method. Attention will be given to proportion and accuracy of shapes, as well as the underlying structures and forms of the head. When the block-in is finished, it will be transferred to a canvas using an oil transfer technique. There will also be a brief discussion of materials and their uses. The first pass of the painting will be an ebauche where the entire subject is treated together as a whole. Special attention will be given to relation of values and colors to give an estimate of the finished picture. Layout of the palette and color mixing will be discussed. Subsequent sessions will be used to work towards completion of the portrait. Various elements such as form, light, edges, color, and other visual phenomenon will be discussed as they arise.

Carl Dobsky is a figurative painter currently living and working in the Los Angeles area. His work is grounded in traditional forms of representation while still incorporating contemporary elements. Dobsky earned a B.F.A from Ringling College of Art and Design and an M.F.A from the New York Academy of Art. Beyond education at these institutions, he also studied classical approaches to drawing and painting at the Water Street Atelier in Brooklyn, NY. He has exhibited throughout the U.S. and in Europe. His work can be found in both private and public collections including the New Britain Museum of Art and the Seven Bridges Foundation. Dobsky previously taught at BACAA in 2010 & 2011.

BACAA Carlo Russo Registration form (PDF)

Still Life Painting w/ Floral Accents

This 5 day class will cover my methods and techniques of still life painting as well as floral painting. Day 1- 3 the students will be focusing on still life painting. During this part of the workshop we will be working in a more indirect, and step by step approach. We will start with a pencil drawing of the still life set up and then transfer the drawing to canvas. Students will then do a thin underpainting and then continue to work up the painting in full color and value. Day 4-5 will consist of adding flowers/ floral notes into the painting in a a more direct manner, which I use for painting florals.

  • Day 1 - Demonstration of drawing and transfer method

  • Day 2-  Demonstration of underpainting and painting method

  • Day 3- Students will work independently

  • Day 4- Demonstration of floral painting method

  • Day 5- Students will finish their painting

Carlo graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2004 where he focused his studies in the  methods and practices of traditional realism.  Since his graduation, he has been a full-time working artist, winning several awards including a fellowship at the Hudson River school for Landscape in 2008, and winning 3rd place in Figurative Painting and a purchase prize at the 2012 Art Renewal Center Salon. While known primarily for his mastery in still life painting, he is accomplished in figurative and landscape painting as well. Carlo works in the natural northern light that fills his studio. He is intent on creating beautiful works which capture the myriad textures, colors and forms we find all around us. He regularly exhibits his work in galleries across the United States.

BACAA Tony Ryder 2019 Registration Form (PDF)

Non-symbolic painting represents what we see with our eyes, not substituting ideograms, like present day ‘emojis’. In learning to paint non-symbolically we develop an understanding of the building blocks of visual experience: the form of things, and the light by means of which we see this form. We become aware of the fact that in all of nature in general, in particular the human figure,  there is a certain wonderfully beautiful kind of formal structure about which there has for centuries been a special knowledge and language.

We who practice the art of painting from life study this knowledge.

Form painting is a way of painting that is one with the understanding of form and light. It is a methodical way of processing and representing our perception of the appearance of the model. Through the agency of light, a great quantity of information shines from the model. In form painting we learn how to format and sequentialize that information, and bring it into our painting one brushstroke at a time.

In this figure painting workshop Tony demonstrates form painting on a toned ground, beginning with a medium-value ochre brush drawing. He illustrates the block-in and refinement of the drawing. He shows and explains how he sees, mixes and applies colors. He explains and demonstrates the logic of the method of painting from dark to light. He describes in great detail the forms of the head, their fluid shapes, convex surfaces and how they fit together. He shows how he builds the painting from the drawing up, again and again with each form, unified by the perception of the organization of the form of the model and the coherent action of the light.

BACAA Tony Ryder 2019 Registration Form (PDF) revised

One week course - an overview of basic principles and practices.

Drawing from the live model.

Two hour general demonstration each morning.

Art of Drawing

Drawing is an art that integrates and coordinates various ways of seeing. At the same time, it is something we do with pencil and paper. We make the mind into an instrument of attention, and then into several more, and then we teach them to play together while we lead the pencil about on the paper in a balletic movement.

Life Drawing

Drawing from life is patterned after the shapes of life, and the movement of life is in it. It is a way and expression of life. This life grows through practice in a supportive environment. We learn to draw by making many drawings, being in the studio, hearing the teaching, and focusing attention.

Point, Line and Tone

We use the pencil differently at different times in the process. Long light strokes and careful curves, hatching and cross hatching. It follows the way that the mind is thinking at that stage of the drawing. The drawing progresses through various stages, and the pencil adapts to the thought process in each one.

Process

In this approach, we begin with the block-in, the structure of the drawing, judging proportion with point to point vision. We infuse the block-in with movement and fullness, and work with it, and gradually refine it and develop it into a convex contour. In this way we make it into a containing shape into which we bring light and shadow. These we elaborate according to our sense of form and understanding of light. This process is demonstrated in class, and the principles explained and illustrated repeatedly.

Study and Practice

The rest of the class is given over to study and practice with personal instruction.

A highly intensive and enjoyable learning experience. A good workout! Recommended to all levels.

BACAA Jon Demartin Registration form (PDF)

Description–

This workshop offers the artist a thorough study of both long and short pose drawing.  The long pose will give the student the opportunity to thoroughly study the objectives for each phase of the figure’s development, beginning with the ‘action’ and ending with the ‘modeling of form’.

The first full two days will be devoted to short poses concentrating on specific objectives, which will be reviewed and demonstrated in class.  Newsprint will be the preferred paper for the short poses.  The remaining three days will be devoted to the long pose, which is designed to allow the student process and implement the principles learned during the short poses and to model form with values.

The basis of the workshop is to build a solidly constructed three-dimensional figure using line as preparation for the modeling of form with light & shadow.  We will endeavor to build a foundation of knowledge so the artist can look for things as opposed to looking at things. The underlying goal is to give artists a deep understanding and appreciation of how line can create three-dimensional volumes in space. This will enhance and strengthen their work whether it is drawing, painting or sculpture.

The instructor will present material in the form of demonstrations and historical references as a practical application to life drawing.

BACAA Tyler Berry Registration

COST: $590.00

Description:
In this three day workshop artists will learn the fundamentals of portrait drawing. With an emphasis on structure and anatomy, Tyler will help students in understanding likeness through careful observation of proportion, skeletal landmarks, and abstract shape design. Artists will also learn to create a sculptural quality to their portraits through in-depth analysis of the light source and how it interacts with the forms of the face.

There will be one pose for the entire three days. The process begins with the block-in stage, which aims to capture the likeness and character through accurate proportion, shape design and structural anatomy. After the block-in is complete, students will move into modeling form through an understanding of the light source.

Comparative measurement, materials, light and form will also be discussed. Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to join.

 Bio:
Tyler Berry (b. 1994) was born and raised in Middlefield, CT. In 2016 he received a BFA from Hartford Art School, and would later go on to work as an animator in Greece and then Poland on the feature film Loving Vincent. During this experience he frequented art museums across Europe, studying and familiarizing himself with the work of the Old Masters. With subjects ranging from portrait and figure to landscape and still life, fidelity to nature and the pursuit of beauty are the driving undercurrents of his work. Tyler is the recipient of numerous awards and has participated in many group shows around New England. He currently lives and works in Long Island City, NY, where he attends Grand Central Atelier’s core program.
