Hours: 10:45-5:00pm Monday Through Friday.

Color Theory and Practice.

For most of the history of art, color was thought of as unknowable, the province of only a gifted few.   While great colorists might be born, an artist can gain an intimate knowledge of color space by understanding the three attributes of color…hue, value and chroma…and practice mixing each.

A painter in his own right, Albert Munsell (1858-1918) used the terms hue, value and chroma in his numerical system of color naming.  A numerical system, he thought, was more precise than the traditional names of color like ochre, crimson and ultramarine.

For example, he would describe a certain yellow not as yellow ochre, but as 10YR 5/6 where 10YR is the hue, 5 is the value and 6 is the chroma.

This three week course will introduce both the novice and experienced painter to the concept of controlled color based on the Munsell system. Week one, artist Graydon Parrish will teach each student how to mix every color within the gamut of oil paint.   The second week, he will introduce the concepts of color matching, shading series and color sequences.  This will enable the student to build successful palettes for any subject, real or imagined.   In week three, artist Tony Curanaj, who has taught with Graydon for years, will test and refine the student’s modeling skills and offer creative ways to use color in composition.

Students who have taken week one and two previously may want to start at week three.   Graydon Parrish will be attending the beginning of week three so that all will transition smoothly.

Please note :

Graydon is teaching the first two week August 8-19, 2016

Tony Curanaj is teaching the 3rd week of August 22-26, 2016

4 Day Workshop

Hours: 10:45 am - 5:00pm

These workshops are offered at BACAA

Learn the Basics of the Floral Still Life

Students will explore the basics of setting up a poetic still life, with an emphasis on the fleeting beauty of flowers. This will encourage a bold, direct application of paint to capture essential beauty. We will discuss the importance of finding an abstract, visual idea in the set up that is all-important for conveying this beauty to the viewer.  Students will experiment with the lush quality of oil paint to find the inherent beauty of thick, opaque lights contrasting with thin, transparent darks. This exploration will help students find their own unique voice. Flowers will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring any still life objects or fruit they would like to paint as well.

Jacqueline Kamin’s illustrious career was nurtured at the Corcoran Museum School and later at the Sculpture Studio and the Art Students League in New York. Her poetic and painterly style developed early on and soon became recognized by many prestigious art organizations through awards and juried shows at the Bowers Museum, the Salmagundi Club, the California Art Club and Oil Painters of America. Her work was included in several internationally-known art expositions held in Hong Kong and New York City as well as the National Museum for Women Artists in her home town, Washington, D.C. She is past president of American Women Artists and brought new energy to the organization with her special vision for women in the art world today. Kamin has been featured in Southwest Art and Art of the West and has her work in such collections as U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, Entrepreneur Magazine, Manocherian Brothers of New York, and Big Horn Westinghouse Corporation. As a way of sharing her artistic passion, she continues to teach nationally for Bright Light Fine Art Workshops. Currently her work can be seen at the Saks Gallery in Denver, Co. and the Lilypad Gallery in Rhode Island and Minn. She will teach again this coming year at BAY Area Classcial Artist Atelier.

Learn the Basics of Drawing and Painting the Figure

Each morning we will draw the figure by learning the important anatomical landmarks to locate. Using a skeleton for reference, students will learn to decipher bone structure by understanding vital landmarks to note on the human figure. This knowledge will create a confidence that allows freedom of line when capturing gesture—the life of a drawing.

4 Day Floral Painting Worskhop

Ocotober 5, 6, 7, 8, 2017
Hours: 10:45-5:00 p.m

Lunch 1:30-2:15pm

In this 4-day class will focus on painting the floral still life in oils. Florals can be a daunting subject and we will try to make sense of the beautiful forms which have fascinated and frustrated artists for centuries. Since flowers and plants tend to move from day to day and even hour to hour the students will draw and paint directly on the canvas with the brush only. The focus will be on capturing the essentials of the still life and finishing areas wet in to wet. I will give frequent demonstrations and critique as we explore the unique nature of flowers and plants in paint.

Carlo graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2004 where he focused his studies in the methods and practices of traditional realism.  Since his graduation, he has been a full-time artist and has exhibited his works in numerous galleries across the United States. While known primarily for his mastery in still life painting, he is accomplished in figurative and landscape painting as well. Carlo works in the natural northern light that fills his studio. He is intent on creating beautiful works which capture the myriad textures, colors and forms we find all around us.

Non-symbolic painting represents what we see with our eyes, not substituting ideograms, like present day ‘emojis’. In learning to paint non-symbolically we develop an understanding of the building blocks of visual experience: the form of things, and the light by means of which we see this form. We become aware of the fact that in all of nature in general, and in the human figure and portrait in particular, there is a certain wonderfully beautiful kind of formal structure about which there has for centuries been a special knowledge and language.

We who practice the art of painting from life study this knowledge.

Form painting is a way of painting that is one with the understanding of form and light. It is a methodical way of processing and representing our perception of the appearance of the model. Through the agency of light, a great quantity of information shines from the model. In form painting we learn how to format and sequentialize that information, and bring it into our painting one brushstroke at a time.

In this portrait painting workshop Tony demonstrates form painting on a toned ground, beginning with a medium-value ochre brush drawing. He illustrates the block-in and refinement of the drawing. He shows and explains how he sees, mixes and applies colors. He explains and demonstrates the logic of the method of painting from dark to light. He describes in great detail the forms of the head, their fluid shapes, convex surfaces and how they fit together. He shows how he builds the painting from the drawing up, again and again with each form, unified by the perception of the organization of the form of the model and the coherent action of the light.

Steven Assael was born in New York City in 1957.  A graduate of Pratt Institute, he focuses his work on the human figure, individually and in groups.  Assael balances naturalism with a romanticism that permeates the figures and surroundings of his paintings and drawings.  His figures are modeled in glowing relief by gentle beams of warm and cool light. October, 2010 to January, 2011, Steven Assael’s work was the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Naples (FL) Museum of Art.  Assael’s paintings were included in the exhibition “New Old Masters”, curated by Donald Kuspit, at the National Museum in Gdansk, Poland in 2006.  A retrospective exhibition was held at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle (WA) in 1999.  Single-person exhibitions of works by Steven Assael have also been featured at the Cress Gallery of Art at the University of Tennessee, Lowe Gallery (Atlanta, GA) and Ann Nathan Gallery (Chicago, IL).  His work has been exhibited at The Arkansas Arts Center, The New York Academy of Art and The Arnot Art Museum (Elmira, NY), and is in the permanent collections of The Hunter Museum of Art (Chatanooga, TN), The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art & Design (Kansas City, MO), The Columbus Museum of Art (GA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY). Steven Assael joined Forum Gallery in 1998.

17th Century Dutch Still Life Workshop
Dates: March 30, 31, April 1, 2018
Hours: 10:45-5:00 p.m.
Lunch: 1:30-2:15 p.m

This workshop is inspired by the Dutch Breakfast Still Life (Ontbijtjes). This type of still life painting developed in the 17th century and while the word “ontbijtjes” is Dutch for breakfast, it was more thought of as “a light meal taken at any time of day”. The Breakfast Still Life is characterized by the display of everything from common everyday foods and items to rare delicacies and luxury goods such as roemers (wine glasses), silver/gold goblets, and chinese porcelain bowls. Still life paintings in this genre ranged from small and simple to large and complex with a variety of meanings, both literal and symbolic. The range of meanings included straight forward tributes to nature and finely crafted wares to moral and religious warnings against excess.

The paintings were created using very specific procedures. They first executed a careful and accurate line drawing of the scene. This drawing was transferred to canvas or a panel and then toned a light gray or brown. The artist then completed the dead coloring (dood-verf) which was a transparent underpainting that would establish the general tones and colors needed to describe each object. Some artists did their dead coloring with full color and some did it with just brown and white. We will use the latter method and limit our palette to brown and white. Once this layer is dry, the process of “working up” (opwerken) began. In this stage, the artist precisely defined each form to completion. They were careful “not to apply paint too heavily, but thin and sparingly, elegantly laid, glowing and pure.” If, when this layer dried, some revisions and final touches were needed, they would do it at this time. There were, of course, different interpretations and versions of this method, but generally, most of the still life artists of that time period worked in some variation of the previously described process.

Due to the time limitations and the importance of experiencing the entire production process, I want everyone’s still life to be simple. The size of the painting should be between 8x10 and 11x14.  I recommend you choose a few pieces of produce (lemons, oranges, grapes, olives, etc.) with a bowl, plate or cup, etc. Metal objects (steel, silver, pewter, copper) are great but avoid high polish. Bread works well too and comes in many varieties. You can also include a piece of fabric, such as a white napkin or tablecloth. If your fabric has a pattern, it should not be too complex.

We will spend the first day setting up our compositions, drawing and transferring. The second day will be used to complete the grisailles. The remainder of time will be spent completing each part with color. I will work with everyone individually throughout the week and will paint alongside the artists on my own still life.

17th Century Dutch Still Life Workshop.

My name is Justin Wood. I am a still life painter out of Grand Central Atelier where I work and teach. I admire your school and would love to teach a workshop there if you thought me a good fit. I have designed a workshop inspired by the techniques and aesthetics developed by the 17th century Dutch still life painters. I have been running it regularly for the last few years and think it would be a good addition to your workshop roster. I can also offer a Trompe L’oeil workshop that has experienced similar success. I would be happy to send you a full description of each workshop if you would like to learn more. Thanks for your time and I hope we can work something out!

ROSE PAINTING WORKSHOP

Dates: December 3-7, 2018
Hours: 10:45-5:00 p.m.
Lunch: 1:30 p.m-2:15 p.m

Garden roses are some of the most beautiful forms in the botanical world.  They have been cultivated for centuries and bear little resemblance to the stiff generic varieties that are commonly available. In this intensive workshop painters will have an opportunity to study their complex geometry and exquisite color subtlety. The course will Include an indirect method of painting and the introduction of a specific limited palette.  A brief slide lecture on the history of the genre will inspire us as we explore this timeless motif.

Previous painting experience is encouraged.
