This workshop offers the artist a thorough study of both long and short pose drawing. The long pose will give the student the opportunity to thoroughly study the objectives for each phase of the figure’s development, beginning with the ‘action’ and ending with the ‘modeling of form’.
The first full two days will be devoted to short poses concentrating on specific objectives, which will be reviewed and demonstrated in class. Newsprint will be the preferred paper for the short poses. The remaining three days will be devoted to the long pose, which is designed to allow the student process and implement the principles learned during the short poses and to model form with values.
The basis of the workshop is to build a solidly constructed three-dimensional figure using line as preparation for the modeling of form with light & shadow. We will endeavor to build a foundation of knowledge so the artist can look for things as opposed to looking at things. The underlying goal is to give artists a deep understanding and appreciation of how line can create three-dimensional volumes in space. This will enhance and strengthen their work whether it is drawing, painting or sculpture.
The instructor will present material in the form of demonstrations and historical references as a practical application to life drawing.

Non-symbolic painting represents what we see with our eyes, not substituting ideograms, like present day ‘emojis’. In learning to paint non-symbolically we develop an understanding of the building blocks of visual experience: the form of things, and the light by means of which we see this form. We become aware of the fact that in all of nature in general, in particular the human figure, there is a certain wonderfully beautiful kind of formal structure about which there has for centuries been a special knowledge and language.
We who practice the art of painting from life study this knowledge.
Form painting is a way of painting that is one with the understanding of form and light. It is a methodical way of processing and representing our perception of the appearance of the model. Through the agency of light, a great quantity of information shines from the model. In form painting we learn how to format and sequentialize that information, and bring it into our painting one brushstroke at a time.
In this figure painting workshop Tony demonstrates form painting on a toned ground, beginning with a medium-value ochre brush drawing. He illustrates the block-in and refinement of the drawing. He shows and explains how he sees, mixes and applies colors. He explains and demonstrates the logic of the method of painting from dark to light. He describes in great detail the forms of the head, their fluid shapes, convex surfaces and how they fit together. He shows how he builds the painting from the drawing up, again and again with each form, unified by the perception of the organization of the form of the model and the coherent action of the light.

Art of Drawing
Drawing is an art that integrates and coordinates various ways of seeing. At the same time, it is something we do with pencil and paper. We make the mind into an instrument of attention, and then into several more, and then we teach them to play together while we lead the pencil about on the paper in a balletic movement.
Life Drawing
Drawing from life is patterned after the shapes of life, and the movement of life is in it. It is a way and expression of life. This life grows through practice in a supportive environment. We learn to draw by making many drawings, being in the studio, hearing the teaching, and focusing attention.
Point, Line and Tone
We use the pencil differently at different times in the process. Long light strokes and careful curves, hatching and cross hatching. It follows the way that the mind is thinking at that stage of the drawing. The drawing progresses through various stages, and the pencil adapts to the thought process in each one.
Process
In this approach, we begin with the block-in, the structure of the drawing, judging proportion with point to point vision. We infuse the block-in with movement and fullness, and work with it, and gradually refine it and develop it into a convex contour. In this way we make it into a containing shape into which we bring light and shadow. These we elaborate according to our sense of form and understanding of light. This process is demonstrated in class, and the principles explained and illustrated repeatedly.

Description:
In this workshop, students will create a finished portrait painting from life using traditional techniques over the course of three days. Emphasis will be placed on large shape drawing, value control, and accurate form-based color Painting the portrait can happen in many different ways from very loose Alla Prima studies to fully rendered paintings and we’ll explore the benefits of each. Class discussions will include how to accurately judge values, value compression, handling of edges, and using simple and complex forms while working from life as well as anatomy and abstract facial structure Darren will demo from the model for the first few hours of class and the students will work the remainder of the day with guided instruction. Quick, direct paintings can be a great way to learn about color, composition, value structure and paint handling. In this class, students will execute 4 to 5 paintings over the course of three days. By only giving ourselves a short amount of time for each painting, students will be forced to be decisive about each move that they make on the canvas without a lot of “wiggle room” for going back and fussing with things or falling into habits of excessive blending or nitpicking. Over the course of the three days, students will explore the idea of “accuracy, without polish”, meaning that our paintings can be quite believable and satisfying, without piling on excessive levels of detail and minutia. By engaging in these quick paintings, we will explore how to prioritize what is truly important to capture in the short amount of time we have and what can be let go of. A strong emphasis will be placed on accurate color mixing, color relationships and understanding light as well as making solid decisions on the palette before applying paint to the canvas. In addition to time spent painting, this class will include demonstrations by the instructor as well as detailed lectures on light and color.

Location: The Workshop will be conducted in the exquisite Chelsea Physic Gardens in London. The Chelsea Physic Gardens is a jewel in the heart of London, founded by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in 1673. Today the Gardens have 5000+ species of botanicals, including rare trees, flowers and herbs. In addition the Gardens for more than 300 years have collected seeds from the many varieties of plants, and are a member of the global seed exchange. Sir Harold Sloan rented the Gardens in perpetuity, and today the Gardens hosts visitors from all over the world.
Description: This 8 day Master Workshop will consist of three days of museum visits and four days of floral painting. Floral Painting will focus on painting the floral still life in oils in a manner inspired by the French 19th Century painter, Henri Fantin-Latour. This method will involve painting florals in a fairly direct manner, which is somewhat painterly and also atmospheric. Many artists can attest that flowers can be a daunting subject and we will try to make sense of the the beautiful forms which have fascinated and frustrated artists for centuries. Since flowers and plants tend to move from day to day and even hour to hour the students will draw and paint directly on the canvas with the brush only. The focus will be on capturing the essentials of the blooms directly from life and finishing areas wet in to wet. There will be daily demonstration by the instructor, as well as ample help and critique as we explore the unique nature of flowers and plants in paint. The class will also include the amazing opportunity to view numerous Fantin-Latour paintings and other works in person at 3 London museums with the instructor over three days. During the visits the students will get a chance to view these works in closer details with instructor who will provide some background and technical insights into the paintings. The workshop will also include a tour of the famous Chelsea Gardens and in addition we will have a local florist as a guest instructor who will give the class a tutorial on the concepts of floral arranging.

Bio:
Paul Rosiak studied drawing and painting at the four-year intensive Aristides Classical Atelier under Juliette Aristides. He has studied at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, spending a year sculpting écorché to learn anatomy of the human form. He continued his study through workshops, studying both drawing and painting with artists such as Tony Ryder, Steven Assael, and Michael Grimaldi. Before studying art, Paul studied Philosophy and English at Claremont McKenna College and Mansfield College at Oxford University. In his final year at Gage Academy of Art, he won Best in Show for his painting Fall. He has had paintings and drawings exhibited at Maryhill Museum of Art, and has been featured in Beginning Drawing Atelier, Artists and Illustrators UK, Plein Air Magazine, and Southwest Art Magazine, where he was most recently featured as one of the top 21 Artists Under 31 to Collect. In his own work one of his goals is “to find and convey the beauty and design in often-overlooked everyday things, and to affirm the dignity and value of human life and uniqueness of each individual person. Working from life is integral to this process, as the connection and focused attention of a human spirit in an age of speed, distraction, and the virtual is one of the things I wish to maintain and give to the viewer”. He has taught drawing and painting in private and group lessons for many years, and strives to combine a strong passion for learning and teaching with a broad educational background to create a unique approach to help students navigate their artistic journey towards mastery.
Synopsis:
Figure Drawing in Graphite
In this workshop students will learn how to create more dynamic and lifelike figure drawings. Through demos, lectures, and practice, students will learn a clear process to navigate a figure drawing, aiming to take fear out of the process and replace it with a relaxed, focused attention that allows greater perception and understanding of the natural world. Concepts and techniques that will be covered will include dynamic and rhythmic gesture, accurate proportion and measuring, structural anatomy, and three-dimensional form.
Achieving a good beginning to a drawing is one of the most important skills to learn. The first day will be devoted to short poses, giving students multiple opportunities to practice the skill of beginning a drawing in a way that sets one up with a solid foundation for success. The next two days will allow students to develop these ideas in more depth with a longer drawing.
The first half of each day will explore these ideas through demonstration, lecture, and Q and A. In the second half, students will draw from the model and receive one- on-one critiques.
Portrait Drawing in Graphite
In this workshop students will learn how to create more lifelike and accurate portrait drawings in graphite. A variety of concepts and techniques will be covered, including: the basic block-in, observing the asymmetrical and rhythmic nature of organic form, constructive and structural anatomy of the head and neck, foreshortening and perspective, 3 dimensional modeling in graphite, measuring for accuracy, and variation of line weight to simulate the effects of vision.
The first day will be devoted to shorter poses, giving students the opportunity to practice drawing the portrait from different angles, and to practice beginning drawings in a way that provides a solid foundation for the rest of the drawing. The next two days will allow students to develop the ideas covered in demos and lectures in more depth with a longer drawing of their own.
The first half of each day will explore these ideas through demonstration, lecture, and Q and A. In the second half, students will draw from the model and receive one- on-one critiques.
Value and Warm/Cool Painting
This workshop is a crash course in oil painting, designed to create a solid foundation for painting with a full palette. Value, temperature, and edges are some of the most important but sometimes overlooked elements in a successful painting. In this workshop we will explore each of these through the lens of still life painting.
In this course, students will learn how to control value to capture the illusion of light and three-dimensional form, and to manipulate edges for a more life-like and artistic visual effect. Through the use of graphite thumbnails and the classical armature, students will also learn techniques for designing a dynamic and powerful still life composition. Finally, students will learn how to perceive and control subtle shifts in temperature in order to capture the illusion of light using only Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and White.
The first half of each day will explore these ideas through demonstration, lecture, and Q and A. In the second half, students will paint using their own still life set ups and receive one-on-one critiques.
On the first day students will practice using compositional sketches to set up a still life of their choosing, then create a small alla-prima still life painting using a monochromatic palette of raw umber or black, and white. On the next two days, students will paint a new still life painting using the warm/cool palette of ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, and white.
Color Workshop with Still Life
This workshop will build on the foundational concepts and practices developed in the Value and Warm/Cool Painting workshop to dive into painting high-chroma subjects using a full palette.
Students will learn the basics of color theory, how to control and navigate a full- palette, and how to give three-dimensional form to high-chroma objects. Other concepts and techniques covered will include: using broken color, the field effect, psychology of color, and color harmony in painting.
The first half of each day will explore these ideas through demonstration, lecture, and Q and A. In the second half, students will paint using their own high-chroma still life set-ups and receive one-on-one critiques.

Description: In this three day workshop artists will learn the fundamentals of portrait drawing. With an emphasis on structure and anatomy, Tyler will help students in understanding likeness through careful observation of proportion, skeletal landmarks, and abstract shape design. Artists will also learn to create a sculptural quality to their portraits through in-depth analysis of the light source and how it interacts with the forms of the face.
There will be one pose for the entire three days. The process begins with the block-in stage, which aims to capture the likeness and character through accurate proportion, shape design and structural anatomy. After the block-in is complete, students will move into modeling form through an understanding of the light source.
Comparative measurement, materials, light and form will also be discussed. Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to join.
Bio: Tyler Berry (b. 1994) was born and raised in Middlefield, CT. In 2016 he received a BFA from Hartford Art School, and would later go on to work as an animator in Greece and then Poland on the feature film Loving Vincent. During this experience he frequented art museums across Europe, studying and familiarizing himself with the work of the Old Masters. With subjects ranging from portrait and figure to landscape and still life, fidelity to nature and the pursuit of beauty are the driving undercurrents of his work. Tyler is the recipient of numerous awards and has participated in many group shows around New England. He currently lives and works in Long Island City, NY, where he attends Grand Central Atelier’s core program.

Garden roses are some of the most beautiful forms in the botanical world. They have been cultivated for centuries and bear little resemblance to the stiff generic varieties that are commonly available. In this intensive workshop painters will have an opportunity to study their complex geometry and exquisite color subtlety. The course will Include an indirect method of painting and the introduction of a specific limited palette. A brief slide lecture on the history of the genre will inspire us as we explore this timeless motif.

Alla Prima painting is a working method where paint is applied wet into wet. This relatively rapid painting procedure yields a typically bold and energized expression as the work or part being worked on must be finished in the first attempt. With time and practice, the skill set gained from this practical and economical process will greatly benefit the artist no matter their subject or style.
In this workshop, artists will create a new painting each day. Participants should bring in their own objects to paint. Canvas sizes should be between 8x10 and 11x14. Once our compositions are designed, we will draw directly on the painting surface with charcoal or paint. After the drawing is completed, a quick grisaille or color lay-in will establish the general color and/or value structure of the composition. While this initial layer is still wet, a final color layer will be applied. The entire process, from the block-in, paint application, and light/color will be discussed and demonstrated in detail.
Bio: A contemporary classical painter, Justin Wood (b. 1982) studied illustration at the College of Visual Arts at Syracuse University and classical technique with Jacob Collins at Grand Central Atelier in New York City. Drawing inspiration from the great works of Caravaggio and Rembrandt, Wood’s oil paintings demonstrate his rigorous draftsmanship, but it is his use of chiaroscuro and tactility that give way to a distinct and alluring beauty in his work.
Equally adept at the art of portraiture and figure painting, Wood has turned his attention to still life painting of which he excels: “I’m trying to create scenes with well-crafted objects, says Wood, that are pleasant to look at and create a decorative ensemble.” Wood’s invented world of light, artifact and nature resonate a calm stability, an atmosphere of meditative silence. With motifs similar to those used by seventeenth century, Dutch still life painters, Wood’s tabletop arrangements present the viewer with an ordered world where man and nature dwell in harmony. Receptacles of pewter, copper and silver coexists with figs, plums, peeling lemons and other edibles, each work owing its cohesion to the manor in which light is bathed around each object.
Justin Wood is currently represented by galleries in New York and Massachusetts. His work has been featured in a number of art fairs and exhibitions throughout the United States. Wood teaches cast drawing and painting at the Grand Central Atelier and currently lives and maintains his professional studio in New York.
