Course description.

First, I would like to specify that my portraits are only painted from life. The camera image is not the same as what the eye transmits.

I believe the portrait should be the artist’s reactions and interrelations with another human being-not with a piece of paper.

Whether it is an apple or a person, I try to completely identify with the subject, to “become” the subject. To be able to do that in paint, it is necessary to have mastered a great number of principles. That side of painting is a kind of science. What we do with the science is our art.  Without light all is blackness. Without forms, light is invisible. If we wish to suggest the seen world then, our subject is light and form, and their interactions.

I’ve been painting portraits for about seventy years. Of course, the big one is likeness. For me, likeness means every part of the person must be a portrait likeness of that person only-down to the smallest sub-forms. Drawing then is of prime importance. It’s the scaffolding that the painting is built upon.

For me, its not necessary to flatter the subject. In fact, I think that is a bit insulting-as if they are not worthy as they are. However, it is even more necessary not to make the person worse than they look. That means very accurate drawing, and exact rendering of all the features.

As a teacher, I want to effect a transfer of knowledge from one mind to another. My classes are very information-intensive. When you leave the class, I want it to be another step up on the ladder. The principles are simple, and I will explain them in simple terminology. The difficulty is that there are so many of them, and they all must be coordinated and harmonized.  But you can do it!

Drapery on the model

Learning how to paint clothing is very important. The great majority of people who commission their portraits prefer to be painted wearing clothing. Most art school programs concentrate on the figure and face. The clothing is often not well understood.

To paint clothing convincingly, it is necessary to understand both its special shapes and gestural effects. Most of the shapes are repeated, like themes with variations. The effects of different actions are dynamic and esthetically very beautiful.

I want to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of the clothed body. It’s exciting to do!

Before we enter the studio, we both need to check our egos at the door!

Ted will Demonstrate followed by students working from the model

Per Ted: “I give demos as needed, for as much time as needed. I don’t follow rigid schedules. My teaching style is organic-a response to what I feel the students most need at any given moment. There will be lots of demos, but not on a fixed schedule. Very often when I am critiquing a student’s work I see something that everyone should hear, so I ask them to gather round. After a demo or explanation, I often pick a student and ask them to explain the principle just mentioned.”
