Saturday Sunday February 15 & 16, 2014
10:45-4:30pm
Lunch 1:30-2:00pm
This is a workshop, geared toward beginning and intermediate students, that will cover the fundamentals of Alla Prima figure painting. In the Alla Prima method, the figure is painted from life in a single session. This technique requires the ability to quickly simplify shape, light, shadow, color and form. It is best expemplified by the powerful works of artists like Frans Hals, Cecilia Beaux, Robert Henri, John Singer Sargent and Anders Zorn.
Strategies for approaching a painting in this simplified, theoretical approach will help any student better grasp the nuts and bolts of the painting process. The class will begin with a lecture and demo, followed by individual instruction. Through hands on experience, students will gain the awareness and confidence necessary to concisely articulate the nude figure in a setting.
This class will cover the painting basics: Palette set up, brush selection (as well as use and care), and design. With the inspiration of the live model, we will create what Titian called “poesie”: poems of light.
