Description:
For this workshop we will have one model holding a sustained pose for the 4 days and we will focus on covering the stages of drawing a portrait from the initial block-in where we look at big proportions and gesture, to getting a likeness through accurate observation and construction of shapes, before progressing to more three dimensional thinking with form modeling. Consideration will also be given to topics such as line weight and edges.
Paper toned with charcoal powder will allow for exploration in working with an established half tone whilst pushing the light and dark values. Having this established half tone is useful for creating a more finished drawing when model time is limited.
Day 1: The day will start with a quick demo on toning your paper and starting your drawing, as well as a brief introduction to what we hope to achieve over the course of 4 days. Consideration will be given to composition and design, and then we will begin working on our drawings in order to maximise model time. The first day will be spent working in a 2D mindset by producing a linear block-in with accurate proportions and shapes.
Day 2: The second day will start with a short demo on arranging our values and how the toned paper helps with establishing our mid-tones. We will discuss modelling form and how to use the various drawing materials to create the effect we are looking for. We will then key our drawing as we begin modelling the larger forms, taking the time to slow down and accurately observe the model.
Day 3: On day three we continue much as we did yesterday, keeping the larger forms in mind as we break them down in to sub-forms whilst working towards completing our modelling of the portrait. We will be thinking more about how we describe the different textures of skin and hair, and our use of mark making to assist this.
Day 4: Today we focus on finishing our drawing and refining what we already have. Thought will be given to how much variation we can create in our line work, and how it describes what is happening to the form. Small details at this stage can make such a difference to finishing and lifting the portrait.
This workshop is suitable for all levels of drawing ability. Attendees will receive multiple individual critiques throughout the workshop.
