Course Description:
Start the new year with color and fun during this 4 day ‘Floral’ workshop with NYC based painter Dan Bunn. We will begin by investigating flower arrangements for painting. From there, students will learn to render the forms of flowers with strong colors by gaining a solid understanding of value, hue, and chroma. We will build the paintings in layers, using a hybrid technique inspired by Dutch and Spanish masters of floral painting and still life. Students can expect to produce their own finished floral painting by the end of the class. Dan will demonstrate with his own painting each morning, and give individual critiques daily.
Day 1
Presentation and demo arranging flowers for a painting, with accessories such as a vase, fishbowl, or insects/animals. We will discuss and practice making some quick thumbnail studies, and start drawing with paint to establish placement on the canvas, proportions, and shapes.
Day 2
Presentation and demo about color, discussing value, hue, and chroma. We will practice mixing color, and make small poster studies to practice applying paint. This way on Day 3 we can return to the larger surface from the first day with confidence for a layer of color painting.
Day 3
Demo creating a strong first pass of the painting. We will work area by area, and establish the forms, mood, and feel of the painting.
Day 4
Presentation and demo about completing the first pass, and adding finishing touches to the painting.
