The Figure In-Depth
Drawing and Sculpting the Figure from Life
10:30-5:00pm

This 10-day collaborative workshop will offer a unique combination of both drawing and sculpting the figure from life, immersing students in a comprehensive investigation of the human form and equipping students with the tools to intelligently compose an accurate and convincing figure in 2 and 3 dimensions.

Students will alternate between developing a rendered charcoal and white chalk drawing in the mornings and sculpting a half-life size (approx. 33inches) figure in the afternoons. Both approaches are designed to compliment one another, balancing both a visual and constructive approach to understanding the mechanism of the body.

Regular demonstrations and individualized critiques will guide students through basic and advanced concepts of figure construction, light and form modeling, anatomical and proportional canons to support a visual understanding, analyzing depth, and understanding contour movement in space. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing a structured thought process for deconstructing visual information and creating a methodical approach for translating that information accurately in charcoal and clay.
