5 Day Figure Drawing Workshop

November 10-14, 2014

A Modern Approach to Master Drawing Techniques

This class explores beautiful master drawing techniques and the artists that used them. Using both authentic and contemporary materials, student study artists from Michelangelo to Ingres and materials such as red chalk and silverpoint in order to develop a deeper understanding of the richness and power of their methods and materials.

Three Color Chalk Drawing

The classic technique of three chalk or “trois crayon” is one of the most elegant and efficient methods of rendering the figure or portrait. It involves the manipulation of red, black and white chalks to suggest the warmth and richness of flesh hues. It is not only a visually compelling technique but also a means to connect with some of the great artists who used this approach such as Rubens, Watteau and Holbein. The class will also involve an intensive exploration of the figure with an emphasis on anatomical form.

DRAWING THE HUMAN FIGURE IN SILVERPOINT

Silverpoint is one of the oldest and most noble drawing techniques and perhaps the most delicate and graceful of them all. Great masters such as Pisanello, Raphael and DaVinci were enchanted by this precious metal and they revealed the graphic beauty and artistic power of silverpoint in their art.

This class will examine the past traditions and techniques of silverpoint by creating drawings made with silver. Using a simple stylus made of silver wire and wood, students will practice this ancient craft through the exploration of the human figure. Various methods of hatching, crosshatching and linear glazing will be studied through drawing demonstrations and analysis of past masters. Paper types and preparation will also be discussed.
